Five member of the Los Alamos High School NJROTC precision rifle team traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this month to participate in a summer training camp sponsored  by the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
David Murphy and Samuel Wolfe participated in the three-position camp and were joined by Noah Marriott, Tessa Snyder, and JoAnna O’Neill along with their instructor and coach, LCDR Wes Shumaker (Ret), for the advanced standing camp.
The team members were coached by collegiate shooters from the top National Collegiate Athletes Association programs in the U.S. The specific coaches for the Los Alamos students were team members from TCU and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, both of which participated in the NCAA championships this past year.
Although the CMP program travels throughout the country, this particular event had the added bonus of being at the Olympic Training Center. On the final day,  the shooters had the opportunity to hear and meet  Olympians including Jamie Gray, a gold medalist in the 50m three-position and world record holder from the most recent summer games.
They also met Lones Wigger, the only shooter currently in the Olympic Hall of Fame. Wigger was a member of the Olympic shooting team in 1964, 1968,1972, and 1980. He won a gold medal in 1964 for the three position small-bore and a silver medal for small-bore rifle, prone position. In 1972, Wigger won the gold medal for free rifle, three-position. His daughter Deena Wifger was on the 1988 Olympic air rifle squad.
