The Los Alamos Fire Department is ready to once again join in the strong firefighter tradition of filling the boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. For more than 60 years now, firefighters throughout the country have hit the streets asking their communities to contribute to MDA, which raises funds for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and related debilitating muscular diseases.

In 2016, LAFD raised nearly $7,500 for MDA, and Fill the Boot Coordinator Kevin Kamplain hopes to top the number in Los Alamos and White Rock between Monday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 18.

“You will see firefighters outside Smith’s in Los Alamos and White Rock from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day next week, so stop by and say hi and put a donation in the boots,” Kamplain said.

MDA is funding some 150 research projects throughout the world and awarded nearly 70 research grants in 2016 with a total funding commitment of more than $60 million.

“The goal of MDA is to care for kids and adults from day one. Early diagnosis, highly specialized care and access to promising clinical trials help ensure the best possible outcomes for individuals and families facing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases,” Kamplain said. “We are proud to be part of that effort and hope the community will once again help us with our Fill the Boot campaign.”
