On The Job In Los Alamos: Ministerial Alliance Meeting

on September 10, 2019 - 11:57am

On the job in Los Alamos are members of the Los Alamos Ministerial Alliance at its monthly meeting Sept. 3 at Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Christian Church on Trinity Drive. Over breakfast there were introductions of new ministers and sharing of the happenings in their diverse faith communities. The main topic of discussion was plans for the formation of a stand-alone non-profit (Safe Spaces) to create a women's shelter in Los Alamos. The incorporation of the non-profit, its goals and focus, as well as possible challenges were all discussed. Dr. Kristy Dean Nadler presented on the need for a safe space to which victims of violence can escape and receive other types of social services. She expressed that the statistics are clear that 'this is a problem in our communities whether our eyes are open to it or not'. Dr. Nadler is a psychology professor and OVW campus violence prevention grant manager at UNM-LA, as well as a consultant and speaker about sexual violence prevention. She discussed the complexity and prevalence of domestic violence in our community with the Ministerial Alliance. They stated that 'interpersonal violence happens often and there is no stigma in experiencing it, and nobody deserves it. When we respond, we should strive to empower the survivors by supporting each individual's own path to safety and recovery.' An organizational meeting will be scheduled for October, where interested parties will be welcome to help form Safe Spaces and to serve the victims of domestic violence here in Los Alamos.
