On The Job In Los Alamos: Firefighter Michael McElyea

on December 16, 2018 - 7:15am

On the job in Los Alamos is Firefighter Michael McElyea Saturday afternoon shining up a medic unit at Station 4 at 4401 Diamond Dr., across from the golf course. Unfortunately, while he may be laughing on the outside he is really crying on the inside because the longstanding tradition at LAFD is when a firefighter's picture is published in the paper, he/she must buy ice cream for the entire station. Fortunately, Station 4 is staffed with just five personnel, a company officer, a driver engineer and three firefighters. Fire Station 4 was constructed in 1964 and through Los Alamos County and New Mexico Fire Protection Distribution Funds, was upgraded in 2002. A separate structure was constructed at that time near the station to house additional apparatus operated by LAFD. Fire Station 4 contains five bays with sleeping and living areas on the north side and work and storage areas on south side. The Annex contains four additional bays and provides additional storage for reserve units. The basement of Station 4 is home to storage cages for special programs such as uniform/clothing, EMS Supply, HazMat supplies, emergency operations equipment and supplies. Photo by Carol A.
