Holiday Weekend Monsoon Surge With Heavy Rainfall

on July 2, 2015 - 4:11pm

NOAA News:

The National Weather Service has announced a monsoon moisture surge with flash flooding possible over the holiday weekend.

Timing - Moisture will surge into the area today and significantly increase the coverage of showers and storms with heavy rainfall through Independence Day.

Location - The heaviest rainfall is expected to impact Central and Eastern NM Thursday and Friday, then over the Rio Grande Valley and Continental Divide Saturday.

Key Impacts:
  • Thunderstorms will produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning stikes and gusty outflow winds, elevating safety concerns for many outdoor activities planned through this weekend.
  • Slow storm motions will result in locally heavy rainfall with flash flooding possible.
  • Some storms will have the potential to produce up to 2 inches of rainfall. Locally higher amounts are likely over the 4-day period.
  • Wildfire burn scar areas, the northeast plains, and urban drainages will see the greatest threat for flooding.
Overview:
Abundant moisture will work into the state through the end of the week while a slow-moving area of upper level high pressure centers over New mexico. Very weak steering flow combined with this moisture will result in locally heavy rainfall, leading to possible flash flooding.

Confidence:
Moderate confidence on timing and location.
