SPORTS News:

The Los Alamos High School varsity and junior varsity cross country teams traveled to Colorado earlier this weekend to compete in the Pat Amato Classic.

Forty-five schools participated in the event hosted by Northglenn High School in Northglenn, Colo.

Although the course at Northglenn’s Northwest Open Space was fast, the rapidly changing weather provided challenging conditions for the runners. While the JV teams raced in breezy 70-degree temperatures, a storm front quickly moved in as the JV girls were completing their race. By the time the varsity boys toed the line, temperatures had dropped by 14 degrees, and competitors fought against a stiff headwind as they made their way around the course.

The weather did little to slow down the Hilltoppers, though. Each team posted strong results, with all four teams notching impressive top-three finishes. The girls JV team scored an emphatic victory with a score of 33 points—32 points ahead of the next closest team. Runners Kamaya Ronning, Tia Hartzol, and Abby Beaus all placed among the top ten individual finishers.

The boys JV team finished third with a score of 63 points, just three points out of second place and nine points behind the first-place team. Ryan Aldaz, Shawn Williams, and Morgan Schaller earned top ten honors in that race.

Both the boys and girls varsity teams secured second place trophies in their races. The girls team was headed by top ten finishers Norissa Valdez and Emma Montoya who guided the team to a final score of 109 points.

Hilltopper senior Duncan Fuehne led the charge for the varsity boys. After an exciting homestretch duel, Fuehne was edged out of first place overall by just 43 hundredths of a second. The varsity boys finished with 84 points—only four points behind the first place team—with runners Steven Strevell and Rafael Sanchez also earning top ten individual finisher awards.

The next meet for the Hilltoppers cross county team is the Northern New Mexico Challenge scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 12, at the Santa Fe Municipal Recreation Complex. They will conclude their regular season of competition at their annual home meet, the Los Alamos Invitational, which will take place Friday, Oct. 26 at the Los Alamos Golf Course.
