YMCA News:

Española Christmas came in July for the Española YMCA Teen Center in the form of a $25,000 grant award from the Lineberry Foundation.

"The Lineberry Foundation support has been instrumental in helping the Española YMCA Teen Center provide teen programming that helps youth be creative, innovative, and driven to make positive choices for their success," EYTC Director Ben Sandoval said.

The Y opened and has operated the Center in Española since 2007, as the result of a grassroots call for youth resources. Major at the time Joseph Maestas and city administrators entered into an agreement to partnered with the Y, and fund approximately a quarter of its operation.

The Center operates as a branch of The Family YMCA, located in Los Alamos, but is a totally youth-serving out-of-school time program. Its goals are to keep kids in school, on track to graduate, and away from harmful behaviors. EYTC has 21 new computers, and learning and recreational rooms. Staff members have built relationships with the youth and are able to guide and mentor them, and connect youth to additional resources as needed.

Rob Wilkinson, CEO of The Family YMCA, said, “The Y graciously thanks the Lineberry Foundation for their support of the Española YMCA Teen Center. The funding will allow us to impact the lives of 700+ kids, and continue to make a difference in Española and the surrounding communities.”

More than 700 youth attend the teen center annually.

The funds will be used to support tutoring, life-skill education programs, mentoring, prevention, cultural arts programs and operating costs. The Teen Center collaborates with more than 40 partners in Española in support of teens.
