Letter to the Editor: UNM-LA Has Huge Impact on Local Education

UNM-LA has a huge positive impact on local education, starting with many of our high school students; our 16-year-old has been learning robotics there. Local entrepreneur William Sellers has argued that Los Alamos does not need "our own little private university."

But let's look in detail at what UNM-LA actually does (losalamos.unm.edu, or ourcommunityourcollege.com). It doesn't pretend to be a self-contained university.

Hilltalkers to Debate UNM-LA Mil Levy Thursday

The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a Town Hall meeting 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at UNM-Los Alamos.

The event will take place in the Lecture Hall in Building 2. The purpose of the meeting is for the public to get information about the proposed mil levy.

The Los Alamos High School Hilltalkers will debate the pros and cons of the mil levy election question, followed by a presentation by Dr. Cindy Rooney, who recently was appointed dean of instruction at UNM-LA. 

The meeting will end with a town hall question and answer session, moderated by the League of Women Voters.

Luján to Hold Video Forum Targeting Poverty and Hunger

SANTA FE - U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján will hold the Third Congressional District’s first district-wide video forum addressing hunger and poverty issues at a number of locations around the state. The event takes place 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 and is now filled to capacity.

Stakeholders, including nonprofits and local government representatives, will come together at locations throughout the district to consider and collaborate on best practices, challenges and needs.

LACDC Board Endorses UNM-LA Mil Levy Tax Increase

The Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation (LACDC) Board of Directors today announced its support of the proposed mil levy increase designed to fund programs at The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos.

The 2-mil operational increase, scheduled for vote by Sept. 17, will boost UNM-LA’s ability to produce science, technology, engineering, and math students that are vital to our unique local economy.

The League of Women Voters invites the public to attend a Los Alamos High School Hilltalker debate and Town Hall meeting 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at UNM-LA Lecture Hall in Building 2.

The LAHS Hilltalkers will debate the pros and cons of the mil levy election question followed by a presentation by Dr. Cindy Rooney, who recently was appointed as the new Dean of Instruction for UNM-LA, replacing Dr. Kate Massengale who recently retired.

Congressional Delegation Urges Increased Oversite of New Mexico's Behavioral Health Crisis

New Mexico's Congressional Delegation sent the following letter Wednesday to U.S. Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Department of Health & Human Services regarding the state's behavioral health crisis:

Dear Secretary Sebelius,

As you are aware, the State of New Mexico is in the process of investigating allegations of fraud against 15 behavioral health providers that offer Medicaid services and has suspended payments to those organizations. We want to thank you for your ongoing involvement to protect the integrity of the process and the needs of beneficiaries.
