House Passes REAL ID Fix

STATE News:

SANTA FE – The House of Representatives has approved House Bill 99, bipartisan legislation to bring New Mexico into compliance with the REAL ID Act and end the practice of giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. 

By a vote of 65 to 1, the House agreed to concur with the bill as amended and passed by the Senate Saturday. It now moves to the Governor’s office for her signature. 

“This bill is a good compromise. It gives New Mexicans a secure and REAL ID compliant driver’s license.

Capital Outlay Bill Passes House Floor

Senate Passes Major Measure To Protect Funding Of New Mexico Classrooms

SANTA FE  The New Mexico Senate today passed, on a nearly party-line vote of 23-19, critical legislation to protect K-12 public school classrooms from deep scheduled cuts totaling $110 million per year.
 
The cuts would take effect in July if no action were taken. Senate Joint Resolution 3 (SJR 3), sponsored by Sen. Michael Padilla (D-14-Bernalillo), addresses a looming shortfall that is part of a sunset provision established by a previous Legislature.

Luján Holds Open Office Hours In Santa Fe Tuesday

SANTA FE  U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District will hold open office hours 5:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Alto Street Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club, 730 Alto St. in Santa Fe. 
 
Luján and his staff will be available to meet with constituents to assist them with casework and discuss issues of concern so he can continue to be a powerful voice on their behalf.

The Republican Party of Los Alamos County will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Room 203 at UNM-LA.

State Senate Snuffs Effort To Legalize Marijuana

SANTA FE – The State Senate voted down a proposed constitutional amendment Sunday evening that would have legalized the recreational use of marijuana on a 17-24 vote.

Before the final vote, however, the Senate approved an amendment that would have raised the legal age to use marijuana from 21 to 25 years of age.
