While Dr. Justin Green joined Los Alamos Surgical Associates this month; he is certainly not a new face. Far from it, in fact.

Dr. Green grew up in Los Alamos. His parents arrived in 1964 and Dr. Green graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1980. During his high school years, he was a familiar face at Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC). Dr. Green said he worked as an orderly.

“I mopped every square inch of this hospital,” he said.

Since that time Dr. Green has had a remarkable career, which has included 28 years serving in the U.S. Airforce, Marine Corps and Army. He also held a private practice for 16 years in Rapid City, South Dakota and was chief of trauma surgery, emergency surgery and critical care at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M and earned a master’s in business administration from the University of North Dakota. He received his combined MD/PhD from the University of Kansas. Dr. Green did his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center and his fellowship in surgical care at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Throughout it all, however, Dr. Green said he has always wanted to return to Los Alamos to give back to his community.

“I’m just really excited to be back home after 39 years,” he said.

At Los Alamos Surgical Associates, Dr. Green is a general surgeon. He said he is happy to return to that role. Working in academics, he said, involves a lot of administrative work and teaching with less direct patient care.

“I like to fix things with my hands,” Dr. Green said. “I like taking care of people. Surgery, especially cancer surgery (involves) a lot of planning, patient care.”
As a general surgeon, Dr. Green said he will provide a wide range of basic general surgery. His additional training as an intensive care surgeon and a surgical oncologist also allows him to perform thoracic surgery, as well as surgery for lung cancer, gastric cancer, melanoma and breast cancer.

He said it feels good to be back providing these services in a small town hospital.

While some things at Los Alamos Medical Center such as the emergency room have gotten a makeover, he noted the operating room remains the same and he even recognizes some of the hospital auxiliary members and staff. The quality of the staff has not diminished.

“The people are always super,” Dr. Green said. “There’s nothing like being in a small-town hospital. It’s really fun. You actually get to be an old fashioned doctor.”

To see a lot of familiar faces at the medical center after so many years, really says something about that hospital, he added.

“For a hospital this size they really have a great staff,” Dr. Green said.

Dr. Green said people can stay close to their home while being treated at Los Alamos Medical Center and close to their family, which is really helpful to them in the long run.

Marketing and Physician Relations Industry Manager Elizabeth Alvarez added, “We strive to deliver that compassionate care close to home and Dr. Green’s skills and compassion for his patients fit into that quality care we at Los Alamos Medical Center strive to deliver with each patient every day.”

She added that Los Alamos Medical Center is thrilled to have him back “with the LAMC family and in the community where he grew up and he loves.”

“We’re excited to have him back,” Alvarez said.

Dr. Green will be meeting with members of the senior centers. He plans to speak about his practice as well as how to prepare for surgery at noon Feb. 8 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Besides his work, Dr. Green said he enjoys hiking, camping and fishing. He loves spending time with his two daughters and his dog Jane.

Los Alamos Surgical Associates is at 3917 West Road, Suite 250 on the medical center’s second floor. Dr. Green is welcoming new patients and accepts all insurances. To schedule an appointment, call 505.661.3030. Dr. Green will begin seeing patients Feb. 1.
