DPU CRC Seeks Public Feedback Aug. 12

on August 6, 2013 - 3:01pm

COUNTY News:

At its next meeting Monday, Aug. 12, the Department of Public Utilities Charter Review Committee will present an overview of its findings regarding possible charter language changes or other recommendations to the public and then open the floor to public comment.

The meeting will be 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the new Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave. This public meeting Monday will wrap up five months of Committee work and more than a dozen meetings that have been held to allow members to explore options and possible solutions for a variety of suggested changes to the charter specific to the Utilities’ department. The Committee met with the Utilities Board last week to review its draft recommendations in order to solicit feedback from the Board. Any additional feedback from the public on Aug. 12 will be considered for incorporation prior to issuing a final report to Council Aug. 30.

The Committee members will present their findings to Council, who could then discuss “next steps” for implementation at the Sept. 10 Council meeting (7 p.m., Council Chambers.) The Council has the final authority to decide which changes will move forward; however, if changes include changing charter language, such changes must be approved by voters.

This five member Committee of three citizens, one councilor and one DPU Board member was appointed by the Council earlier this year as a follow up to discussions held in December 2012 with Council’s previously-appointed Charter Review Committee. The previous Committee worked on comprehensive charter language additions or updates for nearly three years. Changes to the charter have been approved by voters in the last two elections as a result of their earlier work. Recommendations from the current CRC will be presented in the context of the updated Charter language that the previous CRC had prepared last year.

Documents related to possible revisions being suggested for Article V of the Charter, which contains the language specific to utilities, other background information about the current committee’s work on non-charter but utilities-related items, plus, the 2012 report from the previous charter review committee are all available on the County’s webpage at www.losalamosnm.us/Projects/crc.aspx.
