Starbucks and the surrounding building on Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos will undergo much needed improvements over the next couple of weeks.

Owners Joe and Marty Arellano stopped by the Los Alamos Daily Post Tuesday to talk about their plans. They purchased the building last fall that houses Starbucks, Blue Window Bistro, Ruby K's and the Hilltop Spa.

“Our goal is to enhance our charming downtown and make it even more enjoyable for people,” they said.

Exit Realty Associate Broker Mike Griego brokered the purchase of the property and serves as facility manager.

“We will start work this weekend,” Griego said. “The canvas awnings have been there for at least 20 years and are starting to rot, so we will replace those. There are several trees with roots pushing up the sidewalk and creating trip hazards for pedestrians, so those will have to be removed and the sidewalks replaced.”

The existing awnings measure 5 feet. To cover the outdoor seating areas at Ruby K's and future outdoor sitting at Blue Window, the new awnings will measure 8 feet to cover the entire width of the sidewalk, he said. They also plan to install a hotel style curved awning at the entrance to the Blue Window hallway area on Central Avenue.

The planned improvements should be completed within about two weeks.
