NMMNHS News:

ALBUQUERQUE  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division (SAMHSA), a unit of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will reimburse transportation costs for student field trips to the upcoming exhibition, Drugs: Costs & Consequences: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause, at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS).

The money has been made available to New Mexico through an interagency agreement between SAMHSA and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Museum, the creator of the exhibition. The exhibition will be available for tours beginning Jan. 26, 2019 and continue through Fall of 2019.

“We want as many New Mexico middle & high school students as possible to see this eye-opening exhibition about the devastating costs of addiction in the hope that this experience will prevent future drug use, encourage drug users to seek help, and ultimately prevent future deaths from drug abuse,” NMMNHS Director Margie Marino said. “As engaged community partners, we are presenting this exhibition to shed light on addiction and the heinous negative impacts on families and society as a cautionary tale to students.”

“The reimbursements will be applicable to groups of students in the 4th grade and beyond,” Marino said.

As part of the exhibition agreement, the DEA will reimburse up to $40,000 in transportation costs for student bus trips. Further, both the New Mexico Natural History Museum Foundation and the NMMNHS will consider subsidizing or waiving school tour fees when such fees pose a hardship, Class trip reservations can be made at any time and reimbursement for transportation costs will be first-come, first serve until the funding is depleted.
