Los Alamos County Council presented a proclamation during its Tuesday night regular meeting declaring “Fire Prevention Week” Oct. 6-12.
Councilor Antonio Maggiore read the proclamation, which states:
WHEREAS: Los Alamos County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all who live, work or visit our community, and fire is a serious public safety concern; and
WHEREAS: Homes are the place where individuals are at greatest risk for a fire to occur; and
WHEREAS: Having an escape plan with a drawing or map of each level of the home, including doors and windows, is a valuable tool; and
WHEREAS: Residents should practice their home fire escape plan with everyone in the household, including visitors; and
WHEREAS: Parents should teach children how to escape on their own, in case an adult cannot reach them during a fire; and
WHEREAS: Residents should make sure everyone in the home - especially young children - understand how to dial 9-1-1 in case of a fire; and
WHEREAS: This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Not every hero wears a cape, plan and practice your escape!” effectively serves to remind residents to take personal responsibility for increasing their safety from home fires;
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the Week of Oct. 6-12, 2019 as “FIRE PREVENTION WEEK” in Los Alamos County. I encourage our citizens to be aware of their surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergency, respond to a smoke alarm by exiting the structure immediately, and to participate in events and activities about home fire prevention and escape plans being sponsored by the Los Alamos Fire Department.
