Cone Zone: Week Of Aug. 26, 2019

on August 23, 2019 - 9:14am

COUNTY News:

The Public Works/Traffic Division provides the latest updates on the following projects:

Special Cone Zone Notice: Overnight Excavator Transport from DP Road to Main Hill Road (N.M. 502) to Truck Route to N.M. 4 to Pajarito Road - Move Set for this Saturday, Aug. 24.

N3B will be transporting an excavator from TA-21 at the end of DP Road to Trinity Drive, crossing Marimac Plaza's parking lot to Central Ave, then east down N.M. 502 to the Truck Route, beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. They will stop at the Truck Route Inspection Station for inspection, then resume transport after 8 a.m, traveling into White Rock on N.M. 4 to Pajarito Road. LAPD officers will be assisting on site to close N.M. 502 at the bottom of the Main Hill Road during these morning hours to allow the excavator to move safely down the Main Hill Road to N.M. 4 and the Truck Route Inspection Station. Early morning traffic should expect delays on Main Hill Road and the Truck Route near the inspection station during this time frame of 6-8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. The move through White Rock should be completed by approximately 9 a.m. Avoid these areas on Saturday or allow extra travel time for possible delays.

A second move of two excavators is expected to occur in a similar traffic pattern on Saturday, Sept. 7. Because two excavators are being moved, the closure time may be longer. More details will follow in a future Cone Zone update.

Public Works/Traffic Division projects:

Diamond Dr Paving

Star Paving continues milling and paving operations this week. Work will continue during daytime hours Monday - Friday. Crews will not be working Labor Day weekend. Motorists will continue to see daily lane drops for milling and paving operations in each direction as work advances toward the golf course. Residents and businesses along Diamond Drive in this area can expect to see and hear activities related to road construction. Drivers are asked to be cautious when making turns out of side streets adjacent to the work zone; the contractor may be limiting access for left turns out of side streets. Flaggers will be available as needed.

As part of the project, there is a location, approximately 100' in length, that will have to be completely rebuilt due to a previous “settling” issue. This work is in the southbound lanes, not quite a quarter of mile south of the Arkansas intersection. Both southbound lanes will be reconstructed and therefore require closing. Traffic will be shifted into a single lane in both directions utilizing the northbound lanes to accommodate the work zone throughout the week. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting. Drivers are asked to be cautious and courteous through the work zone.

Allow extra time for delays, especially with schools back in session and early release times for the elementary schools occurring on Wednesdays, causing additional traffic congestion in these areas during the lunch hour.

During daytime hours Monday through Friday, crews continue working between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accommodate peak commuter times for travel.

Final project completion is set for Sept. 27, weather permitting.

Other road construction projects:

N.M. 502 Roundabout and Road Reconstruction (NMDOT project)

Trinity Drive continues to be closed between DP Road and Central Avenue for another week in order to facilitate the crossing of water, sewer, gas and numerous electrical and communications conduits. Eastbound traffic is being detoured from Trinity Drive onto Knecht Street and then onto Central Avenue.

Access to DP Road and all businesses on Trinity Drive between 15th Street and DP Road will be maintained throughout the closure. All traffic exiting DP Road will be required to turn left onto Trinity Drive and use the appropriate detour routes. Upon completion of the utility crossing, eastbound traffic will return to the current detour which is 4th Street to Central Avenue and back onto Trinity Drive.

No change to westbound traffic; westbound traffic will continue to use the current detour, which is Central Avenue to Knecht Street.

Traffic advisories from NMDOT are available on www.nmroads.com and motorists are asked to check the site for updates on this project as it proceeds.

TA-21 Clean Up Project - DP Road (N3B project):

No change in truck traffic on DP Road from last week's report. Clean-up work on the LANL TA-21 Site at the far eastern end of DP Road continues. Large trucks carrying away demolition debris containers will be exiting DP Road at an average of approximately three trucks per day. Motorists are asked to be alert for trucks exiting; use caution when entering or exiting DP Road, as this area is near the N.M. 502 Road Reconstruction project.
