LACACIS News:

The Los Alamos Committee on Arms Control and International Security (LACACIS) will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the lounge of The United Church of Los Alamos at 2525 Canyon Road.

A brief business meeting will be followed by a presentation by LANL Senior Fellow Houston T. (Terry) Hawkins. The presentation is entitled “The Art and Science of Surviving What We Are Becoming.” Hawkins grounds his presentation in the field of socially coupled systems and informatics (SCSI), which deals with the social aspects of computerization. He documents the proliferation of complex, networked components of modern infrastructure and the vulnerabilities that develop. Hawkins also addresses methods of dealing with these vulnerabilities in the interest of increased security.

Hawkins is an internationally recognized expert on modern terrorism, particularly involving potential use of weapons of mass destruction. Prior to coming to Los Alamos, he served 25 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a colonel. He has served in many roles at LANL and the federal government including director of the LANL Department of Defense Programs in the Office of the Associate Director for Threat Reduction.

This meeting is open to the public.
