Catherine LeClaire Memorial Organ Fund Concert 4 p.m. Sunday at IHM

on May 17, 2013 - 10:49am

IHM News:

The public is invited to attend an upcoming musical concert hosted by Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Catholic Church of Los Alamos -- the third in its series of free concerts to raise money for the Catherine LeClaire Memorial Organ Fund.

The concert will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19 at IHM, and will showcase the talents of a number of fine musicians from IHM and other churches and musical groups from around northern New Mexico.

Among the featured groups will be an accapella group of twelve voices “Memorare” (meaning ‘To Remember’) formed from experienced singers who were friends of Cathy’s. The group will sing the Robert Shaw spiritual “I Got a Key to the Kingdom” and Daniel Gawthrop’s “Sing Me to Heaven.” A quintet of singers from this group will also perform a barbershop arrangement of “Poor Wayfarin Stranger” and a vocal renaissance piece from Thomas Tallis “O Sacrum Convivium.” Also featured in the program will be an original arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by pianist Daniel Marks and works by violinist Nicholas Travia and pianist Greg Smithhisler. Other portions of the program are still under development but will include additional vocal works and accompanied works with piano, violin and, possibly, a brass quintet.

Admission to the concert is free, although donations to the fund that will replace the current instrument at IHM with a Rodgers three manual organ will be gratefully accepted. IHM Catholic Church is located at 3700 Canyon Road in Los Alamos.

About Catherine LeClaire…

Catherine LeClaire was a part of our fabric of life in Los Alamos and White Rock for more than 25 years. She was both a woman of faith and a very talented musician (guitar and vocals) and artist. She loved sharing all of these gifts with the people around her. Her valiant but short-lived struggle against cancer was a grief felt by many. It is fitting that IHM’s new organ will bear her name as a testament to her love of music and her Catholic faith.

About the Memorial Organ Fund…

The decision was made some time ago to lay the necessary groundwork leading to the purchase of a new organ for the next generation of worshipers and sacred music lovers at IHM. IHM serves more than 1,300 families in Los Alamos and the surrounding communities. In addition, IHM is a popular venue to host musical performances in the community because of its favorable acoustical setting, large space and available instrumentation. A selection has been made of a Rodgers organ with three manuals and the most advanced stereo sampling of cathedral quality sound available. It has been estimated that the cost of purchasing and installing the organ will be approximately $100,000. With another successful concert May 19, and continued contributions from individuals and groups, it is hoped that installation of the new organ can take place this summer.
