Boese Brothers Brewery Opens With A Bang!

Expectations were blown away when Boese Brothers Brewery opened its doors for business Sept. 7. What was supposed to be just a soft opening featured a packed house and lots of satisfied customers.

“It was great,” Co-Owner Sam Boese said.

The brewery, at 145 Central Park Square, has only be open for about two weeks “but people have been very supportive … (we’re) already getting a few regulars,” Boese said.

Sam, who co-owns the brewery with his brother, George Boese, operates a few other businesses outside of the Los Alamos.

Owning a brewery was something they had talked about for years until six years ago when Sam went to beer school and proceeded to work at three different breweries. Then, the Boese Brothers Brewery was established in 2015 in Albuquerque, according to a press release. This was followed by Desert Dogs Brewery & Cidery, established in 2017 in Santa Fe. Desert Dogs is a partnership between Boese Brothers Brewery and New Mexico Hard Cider.  Boese Brothers Brewpub opened its doors in 2018 in Albuquerque before opening a second one in Los Alamos.

Sam said they considered several cities before selecting Los Alamos. He explained that Los Alamos made the cut because “there seemed to be a lot of beer drinkers in Los Alamos.”

Not only is his brewery a new business in town but Sam is a new resident. He and his wife moved here in April. In fact, Sept. 7 was a big day for Sam. His new business opened and two hours later he had to leave to go to the hospital because his wife was in labor, and their daughter was born the following day. Moving to Los Alamos and setting up a new business have both been great decisions, Sam said.

“People are overwhelmingly nice in Los Alamos,” he said.

He mentioned Bathtub Row Brewery staff have been extremely welcoming along with the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce, the Los Alamos MainStreet organization and projectY cowork Los Alamos.

“It seems like it is a great community here,” Sam said.

Since opening, Sam said small changes have been made; for instance, a new menu has been released although it still features favorites such as the Wasabi Roast Beef Sandwich and Chicken and Green Chile Melt.

Popular beer choices are the brewery’s IPA and pilsner beers. Work on the new brewpub started back in the summer. Boese said opening the business took a little longer than expected.

But one thing he said he has learned about being in business is, “you just have to be a little more patient … you have to take your time … at the end of the day you just have to work around (the obstacles)  and be patient.”

Patience paid off.

“We’re just really glad to be here and we appreciate the support we’ve gotten ...,” Sam said.

Boese Brothers Brewery is open 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for lunch. For dinner, it is open 4-10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 4-11 p.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. to midnight Friday.  

The brewery also is open noon-midnight Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
