BANDELIER News:

For young people looking for an active, outdoor job for the summer, Bandelier National Monument is recruiting for two crews - the Bandelier Conservation Corps (BCC) and the Bandelier Preservation Corps (BPC).  Opportunities are available for men or women, ages 16-25.

The BCC will be engaged in thinning and fuel reduction projects, trail work, and assisting the park maintenance crew with projects and special events. The BPC will be assisting with preservation programs, doing graffiti mitigation in cavates, and exterior wall rehabilitation in the ancient pueblo of Tyuonyi. The BPC may be of special interest to members of local pueblos, since it is involved with care of the park's Ancestral Pueblo sites.

The jobs involve a 10-week commitment, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. No housing is available; crew members must drive to the work sites each day, and daily schedules will vary depending on crew work and locations. As a part of Americorps and New Mexico Youth Corps, crew members receive a living stipend of $680 before taxes for each two weeks, assuming full attendance.

Upon completion, each receives a $1212 education grant, which can be used toward tuition at most colleges, universities, and trade schools, or toward paying off a worker's present student loans.  In addition, the crew members acquire job experience and skills in an outdoor environment, gain experience working as a crew member and have a positive effect on a beautiful and historic National Monument.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Check www.youthcorps.org for further information and online application. It also includes information on supervisory positions.
