on February 12, 2019 - 6:30pm
SANTA FE House Bill 8, the “Background Check for Firearms Act,”  sponsored by Rep. Debra M. Sariñana (D-Albuquerque) and Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero (D-Albuquerque), has passed the House of Representatives.
House Bill 8 would require background checks when conducting sales of a firearm.
“We must do all we can to prevent gun violence,” Rep. Debbie Sariñana (D-Albuquerque) said. “I have been personally impacted by gun violence, and have seen the way gun violence affects our children and our communities. It’s time that we stand up and do all we can to prevent this epidemic of gun violence that has touched so many New Mexico families. At the end of the day, this is only the first step in the long road to preventing gun violence, but if this saves the life of even one New Mexico child – then we are on the right path.”
House Bill 8 prohibits the sale of a firearm without conducting a federal instant background check if the sale is made for a fee or other consideration. House Bill 8 will now head to the Senate for consideration.
