Construction Begins Monday on Multi-Purpose Covered Arena

Los Alamos Couny’s Community and Economic Development Department – Capital Projects & Facilities Division announced this afternoon that construction of the new Multi-Purpose Covered Arena will get underway Monday, Oct. 8. 

A community groundbreaking event is set for 3:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the project site at the North Mesa stables.

Paul Parker Construction will install utilities to the site begining Oct. 8, which includes the installation of an 8” water main and electricity. 

The installation of the water main will involve closing the BMX track near Brewer Arena from Oct. 8 through 26.

Richardson & Richardson Inc., will perform earthwork, site work and construction of the 200’x75’ pre-manufactured metal building, with site work beginning Monday, Oct. 15.

The contractors are required to abide by the County noise ordinance, which limits the hours of operation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the contractors have been directed to take special care to eliminate dust from the construction site.

Building a covered arena for riding and exercising animals during inclement weather was approved by County Council at the budget hearings May, 2010.

The CIP Oversight Committee chose to move forward with 200’ x 75’ enclosed metal structure with three 25’ x 25’ covered pens on the east side of the structure; additionally a restroom would be included in the facility. The approved budget for this project is $786,421.

The site plan for the Covered Riding Arena was presented to the Planning and Zoning Board at their April 25, 2012 meeting.

At this meeting there were various question concerning the operations of the facility, an operations plan will be put in place by the Parks department once the facility is built.

The Planning and Zoning Board voted for the approval of the Covered Riding Arena.
