Replace hardware on 50 water valves in the Quemazon subdivision

DPU’s water crews are proactively replacing the hardware on 50 water valves in Quemazon before this winter to mitigate water line breaks in the area. DPU crews will work on weekends until all 50 are repaired.

Traffic and Streets Crews will make concrete and asphalt repairs after each repair. Crews will temporarily close sidewalks for repairs and place orange barrels in the road over manholes to allow them to cure. This should not have a huge impact on traffic. Moving flagging operations will be in place if needed. Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Read DPU’s Aug. 6, 2024 press release for more details.

Central Avenue – Pavement Preservation Efforts

In preparation for winter, Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets will be conducting asphalt patching on Central Avenue as part of ongoing County pavement preservation efforts. This work is scheduled ahead of the colder months to prevent further deterioration of the roadway surface during winter. The timing was carefully chosen to follow the busy summer season and occur before the asphalt plants close for the winter. Last week County staff went door-to-door to speak directly with many affected businesses.

The planned schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, September 28th: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th St. to Oppenheimer. Crews will be cutting the boundaries for the asphalt patching. Work hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Monday, Sept. 30: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th St. to just east of 20th St. The existing pavement will be removed, and the base will be prepared for paving. Work hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  This segment will remain closed overnight.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 1: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th St. to just east of 20th St. Crews will pave the exposed areas. Work hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The road will reopen after paving is completed.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: Central Avenue will be closed from 20th St. to Oppenheimer. The existing pavement will be removed, and the base will be prepared for paving. Work hours: 8 AM to 6 PM. The road will reopen at the end of the day to allow access for the Farmers Market on Thursday morning. Traffic will drive over the exposed base course during this time.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3: Central Avenue will be closed from 20th St. to Oppenheimer after the Farmers Market. Crews will pave the exposed areas. Work hours: 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.. The road will reopen after paving is completed.
  • Friday, Oct. 4: Work will only take place if necessary.

Diamond Drive Pavement Preservation

Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets contracted crews will resume Diamond Drive crack sealing work on Friday, Sept. 27th and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. Work is scheduled between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Traffic delays are anticipated.

This crack sealing work will occur in a mobile work zone approximately 100 feet in length between Trinity Drive and the roundabout at North Mesa, alternating on both sides of the road. Lane reductions with traffic control devices will be in place at the work zone, but two-way traffic will be maintained. Bicyclists may need to share lanes with vehicles in the work zone. Work may continue until Monday, Sept. 30th only if needed.

Non-County Projects:

The following construction projects are not funded by Los Alamos County. Updates are included to keep residents informed of potential traffic impacts. Questions should be directed to the parties identified within each description. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.

Pavilion Construction is managing the construction work of the Hill Apartments and the Realignment of 35th Street at Trinity Drive (N.M. 502).

Construction activities continue along the south side of Trinity Drive near the new 35th St. intersection, which will require the existing eastbound right lane to be closed and temporarily shifted to the center lane. This work zone will stay in place until approximately the end of September when this phase of the project is complete.

The eastbound bike lane is also closed. Motorists and bicyclists are asked to share the road. Sidewalk closures are posted, and pedestrians are asked to follow the signage and not enter the work zone.

All questions, concerns, or special access needs should be sent to Pavilion Construction at 469.907.6045.
