COUNTY News:
The COunty has issued the following Road Construction Update for the week of Sept. 19. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.
The public is welcome to attend any of the Public Works weekly project meetings; contact the Public Works Department at 505.662.8150 for meeting information.
Children are attracted by activity and heavy equipment. For safety reasons, please keep children away from the construction area since they cannot always be seen by workers concentrating on their jobs.
Public Works Projects:
Canyon Rim Trail
Construction on the west leg of Canyon Rim Trail continues as crews complete the installation of a large retaining wall. The trail remains closed to pedestrians west of Fire Station 6. Crews continue to excavate on both sides of the canyon and south of DP Road. Concrete crews will continue forming the ADA ramps and placing concrete on DP Road.
Central Avenue Phase 2 Improvements Project
The contractor will be working over night between Knecht and 9th Street with a full closure 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the weekend and next week. Crews will be working to remove materials and install a new sewer line and manholes.
The contractor has been removing the existing roadway and sidewalks on the westbound side of the road east to Knecht Street. Concrete work and road prep of the westbound lanes on Central Avenue between 15th and Knecht Street is now ongoing and will continue through next week. Central Avenue is one-way and open to eastbound traffic between 15th and Knecht Street, westbound traffic is detoured at Knecht Street through Trinity Drive. Access to local businesses along Central Avenue is open and accessible.
Message boards are positioned through town to provide additional information. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow detours, reduce speed, and use caution within the work zone.
County and Contractor personnel are available to answer questions regarding the Central Avenue Project 10-11 a.m. each Monday in Room 200 of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building at 1000 Central Ave.
Western Area Phase 4 Improvements Project
Construction crews continue making progress with road work on 37th Street, 38th Street, 39th Street and Ridgeway Drive. The contractor will be cleaning up the area early next week. Traffic detours to and from Orange Street are in place.
Construction crews will continue removals on the 40th Street/41st Street Loop. The contractor will continue with utility work and will begin pouring concrete curb and gutter late next week.
Utility work on the 45th Street/41st Street Loop continues.
Residents are required to remove all vehicles on the roadway and find alternate parking during work hours. Access to residences as well as services such as a mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained.
Utilities Projects:
Arizona Avenue/Woodland – Non-potable Water Line and Valve
Excavation will begin Monday, Sept. 19. Traffic will be hindered on Arizona Avenue near Woodland, but the road will remain open. Bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians should use caution in this area.
San Ildefonso Road – Natural Gas, Electric and Fiber Optic Project
Excavation is underway behind the north curb on San Ildefonso Road between Hawk Drive and North Mesa Road. Contract crews will be replacing a gas line and installing conduit for future electric lines and fiber optics infrastructure. The bicycle lane is closed on some segments of San Ildefonso. Bicyclists and motorists must use extra caution in these areas. No additional traffic interruptions are anticipated.
North Mesa Drive – Power Pole and Re-conductor Replacements
DPU’s contractor will replace older power poles and re-conductors on North Mesa Drive between the stables and Hawk Drive. Crews will be working in the shoulder. Minimal impacts to traffic.
