Cone Zone: Week Of Oct. 10

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County has issued the following road contruction update for the week of Oct. 10.

Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.

The public is welcome to attend any of the Public Works weekly project meetings; please contact the Public Works Department at 505.662.8150 for meeting information.

Children are attracted by activity and heavy equipment. For safety reasons, please keep children away from the construction area since they cannot always be seen by workers concentrating on their jobs. 

Public Works Projects:

Pajarito Road – Crack Sealing Project

GM Emulsion construction crews are scheduled to begin crack sealing on Monday on Pajarito Road to the Ski Basin 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Crews also will be working under a flagging operation during work hours.

Canyon Rim Trail

Construction on the west leg of Canyon Rim Trail continues. The trail remains closed to pedestrians west of Fire Station 6. Crews continue to work on both canyon edges north and south of DP Canyon.

Central Avenue Phase 2 Improvements Project

This weekend, Knecht Street will be closed at the Central intersection. Crews will be constructing the valley gutter across Knecht and preparing for paving of the westbound lane across the intersection early next week.  There will be a detour in place utilizing Trinity to the east to access Central Avenue. All business access on Knecht Street will be open.

Crews continue to work under a flagging operation between Knecht and 9th Street daily.

Work continues on the eastbound lane between 15th and Knecht Street in preparation for asphalt paving scheduled for early next week. Once paving is complete, the eastbound lane will be re-opened to traffic and a full closure of Central Avenue between Knecht and 9th Street will be put in place with detours. Businesses between Knecht and 9th Street are asked to use their entrances off of Knecht Street.

Message boards are positioned throughout town to provide additional information. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow detours, reduce speed, and use caution within the work zone. 

County and Contractor personnel are available to answer questions regarding the Central Avenue Project 10-11 a.m. each Monday in Room 200 of the County Municipal Building at1000 Central Ave.

Western Area Phase 4 Improvements Project

Construction crews have completed major road and utility activities in the Denver Steel area of 37th Street, 38th Street, 39th Street and Ridgeway Drive. Minor work such as clean up and landscaping will continue through next week.

On the 40th/41st Street loop north of Sandia Drive, paving is scheduled for Monday. Residents are asked to park on Sandia during operations.

Road work on the 45th Street/41st Street loop south of Sandia Drive continues. Paving is scheduled for the week of Oct. 17. 

Residents are required to remove all vehicles on the roadway and find alternate parking during work hours. Access to residences as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained.

Range Road – Bus Turn-Around Construction Project

Public Works crews continue working on a new bus turn-around on Range Road to support transit service to Ponderosa Estates. The turn-around will be constructed just north of the intersection with Aspen Drive.  The work will primarily be limited to the east shoulder of Range Road, however, motorists and pedestrians should watch for increased heavy equipment operating in the area. The work is anticipated to be completed in October, weather permitting.

Utilities Projects:

Arizona Avenue/Woodland – Non-potable Water Line and Valve

Traffic will be hindered on Arizona Avenue near Woodland as work continues on a non-potable water line. The road will remain open. Bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians should use caution in this area, or use planned alternate routes.

San Ildefonso Road – Natural Gas, Electric and Fiber Optic Project

Crews have completed the installation of a natural gas line and conduit for future electric lines and fiber optics on San Ildefonso Rd between Hawk Drive and North Mesa Road. Clean up work and sidewalk repair will begin Monday and continue throughout the week. Activity will take place out of the roadway. Minimal impacts to traffic are anticipated.   

North Mesa Drive – Power Pole and Re-conductor Replacements

DPU’s contractor will replace older power poles and re-conductors on North Mesa Drive near the Loma Linda neighborhood. Crews are working in the shoulder. Minimal impacts to traffic.
