Contractors and County crews will not be working Monday, July 5, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

Public Works Projects: 

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

Detour is active on NM502 which allows the contractor to work on the north side of the road installing precast concrete boxes.   

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.  

ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street 

Work continues in the east bound right shoulder of Trinity Drive at Oppenheimer on the southwest corner. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones. 

Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.  

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South.  The contractor will continue removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, driveway aprons and curb and gutter in selected areas along Capulin Rd, Alamo Rd, Oro Ct and Cedro Ct.  Utility work will continue on Cedro Court and Big Rock Loop (south) including the installation of new gas and water lines to residences. Utility work on Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St continues with installation of water and gas lines. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Road by the United Church remains closed pending repaving.  Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is also closed in this area, but pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence. 

Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

Countywide Road Striping

Crews continue their annual road striping project until complete, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and finishing daily by 3 p.m. 

Countywide Vegetation Control

Crews continue annual vegetation control in various areas and on trails around Los Alamos beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending by 3 p.m. Monday – Friday until completed. They will be trimming trees, bushes and other vegetation obstructing the view of signs, intersections, etc. They will be closing trails intermittently as they progress. 

Non-County Projects: 

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. Please direct questions or concerns to the project contact listed below:

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs Begin Tuesday (LANL):

Work to extend the life of the LA Canyon bridge (sometimes referred to within the community as Omega Bridge) will begin Tuesday, July 6. Work will begin on the east side of the bridge. However, the sidewalk will be closed when work moves to the west side. LANL recommends using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge.

West Road (LANL)

Because of recent rains, crews were unable to complete the project by Saturday. Therefore, West Rd will be down to one lane with temporary traffic lights the week of July 5. Follow signals.

New informational kiosks and trail markers for Reservoir Trail will be installed soon.

DP Road (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Next week, roadway reconstruction activities continue with roadway grading and curb & gutter construction. These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  

The contractor work in DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway.  All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are now expected to be substantially completed by the end of July. Navajo Road Conduit/Fiber Installation – Sidewalk Closure and Flagging Operation (Sons Communications)

Crews will be installing new conduit and fiber on Navajo Rd between San Juan and El Nido through Thursday, July 8. Work will begin each day at 8 a.m. and end by 6 p.m. Expect sidewalk closures in this area and intermittent flagging operations as needed. Contact Anita Morales 505.410.2384 or Edgar at 505.221.9434

Los Pueblos Conduit/Fiber Installation – Sidewalk Closure and Flagging Operation (Sons Communications)

Sons Communications will be installing new conduit and fiber on Los Pueblos between 90 San Juan to 580 Los Pueblos through July 8th. R and M Construction – 1010 Central Ave., Sidewalk Closure

Sidewalk access on the north side of Central Ave from 1000 Central Ave. to the entrance to the Bradbury Museum complex is closed to pedestrian traffic through Wednesday. Pedestrian traffic is detoured to the south side of Central Ave at Knecht Street and then detoured at the intersection of Central Ave and 15th to the north side of Central Ave. Contact: Robert Sanchez 505.927.2027.
