Public Works Projects:
Canyon Rim Trail Underpass
The highway detour has been shifted to the north side of N.M. 502 allowing the contractor to work on the south side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and retaining walls.
Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot and a 100 foot section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from the project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)
TLC Plumbing and Utility continue road and utility improvements on Alamo Road, Capulin Road, Tsankawi Street, Oro Court, Tsankawi Court, Cedro Court and Big Rock Loop South. Utility work will continue on Alamo, Capulin and Tsankawi including new water and gas main lines. New water service cans and gas service lines to homes will continue to be installed along Capulin and Alamos. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around work zones.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

The first section is between Knecht Street and DP Road and the section is DP Road to the trail termini. These sections of the trail will be closed during repairs, which include mill and overlay, crack sealing and fog seal.
No street closure will occur during the construction.
Work commenced Tuesday, July 27 and is scheduled for two weeks. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, weather permitting.
Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Center)
The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving. Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is open from the Nature Center to the back drive of the Aquatic Center. From there, pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence.
The public is also reminded that the “back driveway” to the Aquatic Center is closed to the public during construction. Please do not use this area to access the trail. Please use the trail entrance at the Nature Center.

Rockfall Mitigation project to begin on N.M. 502
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) along with GeoStabilization International (GSI) will begin a rockfall mitigation project Monday Aug. 9, in the Los Alamos area.
Due to its composition, the existing hillside is subject to rockfalls during rain and snow events which can pose a danger to passing motorists. The project will remove any rocks that are deemed a threat to motorists, under controlled conditions. The project is expected to take 10 working days to complete, weather permitting.
Work will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Due to the nature of the work, N.M. 502 will be closed along a 2-mile stretch – from one mile east of Airport Road in Los Alamos to the junction with N.M. 4 (mile marker 4 to mile marker 6) during working hours. All traffic into and out of Los Alamos will be routed onto the truck route during this time.
Motorists are advised to use caution, obey posted speed limits, expect delays and plan accordingly.
Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs (LANL):
- The bike path reopens evenings and weekends.
- Traffic remains detoured to the bridge’s east side with one lane in each direction
- The speed limit is 15 mph.
To avoid congestion and delays, consider using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge. Check out the Route 1 (downtown circulator bus) schedule here.
Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction area; the speed limit is 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute during peak travel times in the morning and evening.
