Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting 7 p.m. Sunday

COMMUNITY News:

The Los Alamos Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will host a local participation in the Worldwide Candle Lighting at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Ashley Pond bandstand.

As candles are lit at 7 p.m. local time, hundreds of thousands of persons worldwide commemorate and honor the memory of all children gone too soon. Please join with us in creating faralitos to honor the children of Los Alamos lost to us through an early death.

Materials will be provided between 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. to create faralitos. The faralitos will be lit promptly at 7 p.m. and remain burning until 8 p.m. Once the faralitos are lighted, the service will continue with a prayer, music and time for sharing memories. Membership in The Compassionate Friends is not required. Light refreshments will be available.

The Worldwide Candle Lighting is now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting on the globe. The event began in the United States in 1997 as a small internet observance. Since 1997 it has increased to include the entire world, moving from time zone to time zone, as a 24-hour wave of light.

In addition to the formal services, thousands of families will participate privately in their homes. It is a gift to the bereavement community from The Compassionate Friends; a quiet remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten.
