Community Invited To White Rock July 4 Celebration

4TH OF JULY News:

The annual White Rock July 4th celebration will be held again this year at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 366 Grand Canyon.

For the second year in a row, arrangements have been made for a US flag to be flown over the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. An organized run/walk will transport the flag from Santa Fe that morning, to arrive in White Rock in time for the parade.

We are extending an invitation to all veterans and current military personnel to join in the final leg of the run/walk from the intersection of Rover Boulevard and Grand Canyon Drive, two blocks east to the church parking lot. There, they will be honored with a short message, the history of the flag will be shared, and the raising of the colors will be followed by the national anthem. Any who wish to be part of this group are asked to meet at the intersection at 9:30 a.m.

The Children’s Parade will begin after the ceremony. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from various area units will lead the parade carrying the colors. Any veterans or military personnel who wish to participate in the short parade, will follow the colors, children of all ages will be next. Children are encouraged to dress up, decorate their bicycles, wagons, tricycles, etc. and join in the fun. The parade will be escorted by the Los Alamos Police and Fire Departments. The parade route is less than a half mile and will begin and end at the Church parking lot.

A carnival will follow the parade onthe shady back lawn of the church. All games, prizes, refreshments, and visiting are free. There will be balloons, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, and ice water for everyone. The carnival will end shortly after noon.

This tradition began more than 43 years ago as a small family neighborhood celebration in White Rock and has grown to involve around 1,000 people each year.

Everyone is invited to come, participate, and feel the spirit of this great country and celebrate the Birthday of the U.S.A.
