Acrylic PLAIN AIR Workshop   We don’t need to be somewhere far away or exotic, we’re having everything in walking distance in front of us: the very unique Los Alamos landscape. Let’s take advantage of and appreciate our nature we’re surrounded by and hold it in our paintings we create during our Plein Air sessions. The emphasis of the class is to have fun painting in an exclusive Los Alamos outside setting and to create a particular rare work of art.

Rain Water Harvesting 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at First United Methodist Church (715 Diamond)
Explore opportunities for water harvesting during this interactive presentation led by Jeffrey Adams of Terrasophi. Mitigate stormwater runoff, decrease use of potable water for irrigation, create a supplemental water source. Five rain barrels hand painted by local artists will be given away at the event. Sponsored by the Department of Public Utilities, Fuller Lodge Art Center and the Garden Clubs of Los Alamos and White Rock.

Celebrate the joys of playing outside with this wrap up of the Summer Family Evenings series in 2013. Mesa Public Library’s Angie Manfredi joins to help create a Storywalk centered on Roxaboxen.  Build your own world outside, and share memories of outdoor play with your family. Free!

Snake Safety 7 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 7 at PEEC (3540 Orange St.)
Local snake expert Tom Wyant will tell us what to do if we encounter a snake in the wild. He will also help us learn the proper identification of our native snakes, so that we can identify venomous and non-venomous snakes in the surrounding area. Free, no registration required.

Join New Mexico’s unofficial “Butterfly Guy” Steve Cary at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 to learn more.
Cary’s talk will be in advance of the 21st Annual Los Alamos Butterfly Count Saturday, Aug.17. Participants for the count should meet at 8:30 a.m., at PEEC or 9 a.m. at the Burnt Mesa.
