Old La Bajada Road Hike 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13 – Meet at PEEC to carpool
Janie O’Rourke will lead a hike at Old La Bajada Road. The trail follows a historic roadway up and down the escarpment at La Bajada, a travel route that dates back to the Spanish settlement in New Mexico and Camino Real. The highway, now I-25, was moved to today’s alignment in the 1930s. During this hike, the group may also visit archaeological sites. Hiking distance is 6-8 miles; expect 4-5 hours of moderately difficult hiking (600 ft elevation climb). The trailhead is located 31 miles southwest of Santa Fe. Bring lunch, water, and good hiking shoes.

The Pajarito Astronomers – County-sponsored Dark Night 7:45 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at Spirio Soccer Field, Overlook Park in White Rock.  Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze.

7th Annual Chili Bowl Cook-Off, 11 a.m. to 2 p,m. Saturday April 13 at the Santa Claran Casino Special Events Center
This amusing and tasty event benefits the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen. Family fun includes snacks, entertainment, chili tasting, and contestants for prizes and trophies. Caving Outing 8 a.m. Sunday, April 14 Meet at PEEC (3540 Orange St.) to Carpool to Alabaster Cave
PEEC is offering an exciting outing to Alabaster Cave near San Isidro. Avid outdoorsman, Tony Hinojosa, will lead a group through the cave, stopping for lunch in the cool darkness. Participants need to wear tough, close-toed shoes or boots and clothes that can be soiled and ripped. Bring layers (long-sleeve shirt or jacket), as you may feel cold when sitting in the cave. Bring a multi-sport helmet (skateboard/climbing, not bike), headlamp, flashlight, kneepads, elbow pads, and gloves. Some equipment will be supplied, but not enough for everyone. Participants should also bring a packed lunch to eat in-cave and water in a backpack/bag that can handle bring dragged through the cave.
