Christian Science Society News:
On a snowy winter’s night 150 years ago, a woman took a fall on an icy sidewalk in Lynn, Mass. Her condition was such that she was taken to a nearby home and a doctor called. A frail woman, she’d been an invalid off and on throughout her 45 years on earth. The doctor wasn’t hopeful about her recovery. So, this woman asked for a Bible. It was natural for her to turn to the Scriptures. Her mother had taught her when she was a child that she could look to the God who is love and the Bible for comfort and inspiration.
The woman read an account of one of Christ Jesus’ healings and she herself was healed. She got up and went downstairs to everyone’s amazement. It was a miracle.
Intelligent and curious, over the years she had studied current medical trends, including homeopathy, diet, and mesmerism, in hopes of healing. Sometimes she’d found relief, but that relief always came up short. It was temporary.
So, on that snowy night, it was natural for her to ask herself – and to ask God – what in the world had happened? It was clear to her that the answer would be found in the Scriptures. Her journey of discovery took her through hard, challenging times. But she persevered, taking copious notes on what she was learning about God and about the Christ Truth that Jesus taught and lived.
She found she could heal others. She taught others to heal as she did. And ultimately, she wrote a book about Christian healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She also founded a church based on Christ Jesus’ healings and teachings, three magazines focused on healing, and an international newspaper. When the woman, Mary Baker Eddy, passed on 45 years after that snowy night, she was arguably the most famous woman in America.
