Cheri Host was a die-hard golfer. She used to get up early in the morning and play nine holes while it was barely light outside using glow-in-the-dark golf balls. Her other passion was Sage Cottage Montessori School in White Rock.
Host passed away in 2012 but many people still recall that she got non-profit status for the preschool in 2011 so that she could continue to take state-aid students. This allowed her to raise funds to cover the part of their tuition that is not covered by the State, allowing access to children who would not otherwise be able to attend. Sage Cottage has four state aid children enrolled at the school, thanks to Host’s efforts.
Theresa Cull is the co-chair of the Sage Cottage Board of Directors and has organized the Cheri Host Memorial Golf Tournament slated for Saturday, May 20. She believes it will be a fitting tribute to Host’s love of golf and devotion to Sage Cottage as well as raising funds for lower-income children’s additional tuition costs.
“It would be great if some of the golfers who knew Cheri would put together teams for this tournament,” Cull said. “That would truly honor her memory.”
She said that although Host was “pretty competitive”, the tournament promises to be fun and golfers don’t even have to have handicaps. Format for the tournament will be Texas Step-Aside Scramble.
The tournament will run noon to 6 p.m. with check-in and access to the free driving range at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $100 per person or $85 per person if received by May 13. Refreshments, lunch, awards and prizes after the tournament will be provided.
