SPORTS News:

Charger Aquatics swim team returned this past week from Ft. Myers, Fla., which was their 3rd annual summer training trip to the Sunshine state.

The kids worked out for a week with Gulf Coast Swim Team and Bloomington-Normal YMCA Waves swimmers before competing in the 2015 GCST Summer Invitational meet at Florida Gulf Coast University. With only nine Charger swimmers competing against 19 other teams (430 swimmers) at this event, the team placed well at 10th.

They were led by Maria Venneri, a swimmer at Grinnell College who is home for the summer, and Sarah Lott who placed 3rd overall out of 60+ swimmers competing in the Senior Girls’ division. Alana Goodwin, a newcomer to the team, had an impressive debut in her backstroke swims placing 2nd overall in the 100, and 7th in the 200.

The youngest swimmer on the trip, Sophia Gossum, 11, placed 5th in both her 50 and 100 freestyle swims, and 9th in the 50 and 100 breakstroke races.

Rounding out the team, Sara Shiina, Arrika Duran, Rielly and Jordan Kinlaw all had top 16 finishes in their races―scoring points for Chargers―and Victoria Gossum has some amazing time drops during her swims. (See full results below)

One of Charger’s youngest swimmers here in Los Alamos, Duncan Henderson, 8, has been busy this summer breaking New Mexico swimming records. At the Denver Hilltoppers meet in April, Henderson smashed the 200 IM record with a time of 3:11.35.

He also went on to capture the 200 freestyle record down in Albuquerque a few weeks ago with an extraordinary time of 2:48.90. Way to go Duncan!

Charger Aquatics is finally pleased to announce the addition of its newest coach, Dylan Lake, a 2011 graduate of Los Alamos High School, who recently graduated with honors from Florida Southern University.

He swam all four years at Florida Southern (a Division II team), and placed every year at the Conference Championship meets. Lake has returned to Los Alamos and is on staff at the Pojoaque Wellness Center.
He will be coaching Charger swimmers from the Los Alamos and Santa Fe areas from this facility.
