Celebrate The Great Outdoors This Spring In Los Alamos

Los Alamos, NM is a hub for outdoor adventures and “Aha Moments” and, as the gateway to three National Parks, it’s theplace to be this spring. With National Parks Week, Earth Day and more, Los Alamos has activities and attractions for all nature lovers and history buffs. 
 
“Spring is the perfect time to enjoy an outdoor getaway, unplug and get back to nature,” County Marketing Manager Kelly Stewart said. “In and around Los Alamos, opportunities to explore and celebrate nature abound. From the Earth Day Festival to fee-free days at National Park sites, spring is an ideal time for all with a love of the outdoors to visit the area.”
 
National Parks Week is April 21-29 and on April 21, visitors can check out the three National Park sites, all within a 5-minute walk or a 30-minute drive from downtown Los Alamos—Bandelier National Monument, Valles Caldera National Preserve and Manhattan Project National Historical Park—for free.
 
Additionally in April, Los Alamos’ Earth Day and Earth Week celebrations are a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Beginning Saturday, April 14, Earth Week will include events like a Spring Trail Workdays, Ancestral Puebloan Fire Practices, and the premier of National Parks Adventure (a full-dome film at the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium).
 
Saturday, April 21 the celebration continues with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) Earth Day Festival. Admission is free, and events run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Los Alamos Nature Center. The family-friendly event will feature entertainment, food from Secret City Kitchen, information booths and activities for all ages.
 
This year’s Earth Day Festival at the Los Alamos Nature Center will focus on a journey to zero waste and will feature a Naturalization Ceremony at 10 a.m., the Nature Play Treehouse Ribbon Cutting at 10:45 a.m., opportunities to start a recycle fashion show outfit, and more. There will be musical performances by Recycle Man, with creative instruments for children to play and a special performance by Wise Fool.

For those visiting in the spring, no visit would be complete without a stop at the Los Alamos Farmer’s Market. Kicking off with Opening Day of the outdoor market Thursday, May 3, the market offers visitors and local the chance to stock up on New Mexico’s signature food item—green chile. Additionally, those who stop by the market can expect to find goat cheese, goat milk, nuts, plants, baked goods, fresh fruit and produce, a variety of meat—including Alaskan fish, and even fresh tortillas made on site using local flour and local corn. The outdoor Farmer’s Market season runs May–October, every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Mesa Library Parking Lot, and parking is always free.
