Domestic Violence: Bullying, Sexting & Other Hot Topics

By MAGGIE SMITH
Los Alamos

What, you may ask, does this have to do with domestic violence? A major component of addressing domestic abuse and violence is the effort to prevent it from happening in the first place. The challenge is to find out where that “first place” resides.

Various aspects of the behavior of middle and high school students have given rise to a considerable body of research. Bullying, one of those aspects, is certainly nothing new. Mark Twain, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Charles Dickens, and numerous other authors have included incidents of bullying in many of their widely read works, Read More

Letter To The Editor: P&Z Meeting Is Crucial June 15

By GEORGE CHANDLLER
Los Alamos

At the P&Z meeting last night they discussed the Round 2 meetings for the comp plan. Meeting # 1 is scheduled for Wednesday June 15, 6-8 p.m., at UNM-LA Room 230. The topic is “Neighborhoods, Density and Growth.”

This meeting will address the issues our downtown residential neighborhood faces. These came to a head when UNM-LA, with the complicity of the Community Development Department, attempted to convert the student housing on 9th Street to a super-dense 50-foot luxury highrise that would have offered only a token dozen or so student apartments. Letter To The Editor: Sheriff’s Office On Council Agenda

By JOHN L. HORNE
Los Alamos Deputy Sheriff

The upcoming county council meeting will address an issue to vote on the abolishment of this county’s Sheriffs office. This is the most important issue to be addressed in this meeting.

In the past the citizens of Los Alamos have been deceived by an unlawful county charter issue that has prevented the Sheriffs office from performing its duties as prescribed by state law. We have some County Council members who feel that the Sheriffs office is a threat to their ability to control the community.

The Sheriffs office is empowered by our constitution Read More
