This year has been one of milestones for Los Alamos National Laboratory, including for its Bradbury Science Museum. To mark the museum’s 50th anniversary, the museum will host a reception open to the public from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.
“For 50 years, the Bradbury Science Museum’s mission has been to foster enthusiasm and support for science and engineering, and a better understanding of the mission and work of the Laboratory,” said Linda Deck, Bradbury Museum director. “We’ve had such great support from the Laboratory and the community and we look forward to working with both of them in the future.”
The museum was originally founded in 1954 by Robert Krohn, but was a classified museum when it first opened. In 1963 Robert Porton convinced then Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Director Norris Bradbury to open the unclassified museum. The museum moved to its present location in 1993.
At the reception, Katy Korkos from the Los Alamos County Chamber of Commerce will talk about the importance of having the museum in its downtown location and what it does for the community and local businesses. Glenn McDuff, of the Laboratory’s Surety Systems Engineering group, will share a few anecdotes about how he has acquired artifacts for the museum. A short interview with Krohn, who was the first museum director, also will be shown.
Attendees will be able to view historic images of the Bradbury Science Museum, and changes to it throughout the decades, and see the chair used by Los Alamos’ first director, J. Robert Oppenheimer. The reception will be a social opportunity in which the community can reflect on what the museum has meant to them in the past and today. Light refreshments will be served.

Bradbury Science Museum is located at 1350 Central Ave., in downtown Los Alamos. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday. Mensa, an internationally recognized high-IQ society, named the Bradbury Science museum as one of the top 10 “Favorite Science Museums.”
