The Los Alamos Police Department issued the following information to alert the community to a possible telephone scam underway in the area.
A woman contacted the police to report that she received a telephone call from someone pretending to be the IRS and informing her that she owed money to the IRS.
They asked her if she had an attorney, to which she stated that she didn’t. The woman told police that her husband typically takes care of the bills and the taxes, and she was certain he had done so.
The same people called back a number of times telling her that she could settle the issue by sending them $1,000. The woman expressed concern that an older person might fall for the scam and actually send the money.
