Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Arrested

Jaime Veleta Jr.

BERNALILLO SHERIFF News:

Jaime Veleta Jr. was extradited to Bernalillo County Wednesday from Mexico.

Veleta has been a fugitive since 2008, wanted for his role in the homicide of Danny Baca. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with The Border Violence Division of New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, United States Marshals Service, United States Department of Justice, and the Mexican Government have worked tirelessly to bring Jaime Veleta back to New Mexico.

Veleta will face charges of Murder, Kidnapping, Aggravated Burglary, Tampering with Evidence and Conspiracy. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives have worked relentlessly in an effort to bring justice to the Baca family.

“I am proud of the tireless efforts of our investigators and confident this dangerous fugitive will be brought to justice for the Baca family. I am thankful for the continued collaboration with our local and federal partners,” Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III said.

“I am pleased that our office has successfully extradited Jaime Veleta from Mexico, where he evaded prosecution, and secured his custody in the State of New Mexico so that he will not escape trial for murder charges in Bernalillo County. I am grateful for the support of our law enforcement partners including the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office who investigated this case and brought Veleta back as part of their participation in the US Marshal’s Task Force,” Attorney General Hector Balderas said.
