Bald Eagle Is Great Symbol Of American Patriotism

This bald eagle perched in a tree was spotted Wednesday during a road trip in Big Timber, Mont., near the Boulder River. Congress chose the bald eagle as the emblem of the United States of America June 20, 1782 because of its long life, great strength and majestic appearance, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent. Benjamin Franklin thought the wild turkey would be a better symbol because it was a much more respectable bird. The other members of Congress did not agree with Mr. Franklin.
