NMDCA News:
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) has launched a new website for El Palacio, its nationally and state award-winning magazine that has chronicled New Mexico’s history, art, culture, and people since 1913.
As the nation’s oldest museum-related magazine, El Palacio has spent more than a century documenting the stories that define the Land of Enchantment. The new website expands access to the magazine’s rich collection of articles while providing readers with an easier way to explore current issues, discover archived content, and stay connected to the people, places, and traditions that shape New Mexico.
“For more than a century, El Palacio has informed and inspired readers with creative and scholarly storytelling about New Mexico’s abundant culture, history, and art,” said Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. “Making this content more accessible online ensures El Palacio continues its enduring mission of preserving New Mexico’s history while connecting readers to the people, places, and stories that define our state’s rich cultural heritage.”
Through in-depth features on history, culture, archaeology, arts, and contemporary issues, El Palacio offers readers a deeper understanding of New Mexico’s past and present while highlighting the state’s enduring influence on the American Southwest.
“The new website is an excellent companion to the print magazine because it provides a beautiful gallery of past issues, a comprehensive contributor directory, an overview of the magazine’s history and many changes over time, Encounter Culture podcast episodes, and so much more,” says El Palacio Editor, Emily Withnall. “These features will allow readers to more easily find out about upcoming El Palacio events, access podcast episodes, and follow their favorite writers.”
“At the very beginning of this project, Publisher Daniel Zillmann shared his vision to bring El Palacio’s digital presence up to the level of its content,” says Evan Schoninger, Inbox Editorial. “With a targeted digital distribution strategy, a fresh design, and improved search and schema, new readers will have an easier path to El Palacio’s rich stories and histories. It was a privilege to help build that foundation with Matthew Wright of Webwright, and to help carry the magazine into this new chapter.”
El Palacio continues to earn international, national, and state recognition for excellence in journalism, photography, editing, and podcasting from the International Regional Media Association, National Press Women Association, and New Mexico Press Women. The new website represents the latest step in El Palacio’s evolution, bringing its award-winning journalism to readers wherever they are while preserving a legacy that has made the publication one of New Mexico’s most respected cultural voices for more than 110 years.
