LIBRABRY News:

Santa Fe author and mediator Lucy Moore will talk about her books Into the Canyon and Common Ground on Hostile Turf at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22 at Mesa Public Library. Her talk is the latest offering in the Library’s ongoing Authors Speak Series.

Moore’s first book, Into the Canyon, was published by UNM press in 2004. It chronicles a time when Moore was fresh out of college, as she finds her place on the Navajo reservation. The book won the Best Memoir award from Women Writing the West in 2005.

Moore describes her book as follows: “My cross-cultural memoir reflects on those years spent in a very foreign land, and how we adjusted and came to feel at home. In the process I learned to accept myself as an outsider and I found ways to be useful – teaching Headstart, serving as Justice of the Peace, and selling car insurance, to name a few.”

She spent seven years in Chinle, Arizona, before moving to Santa Fe where she found a calling as a mediator who specializes in cross-cultural environmental mediation. Storytelling is at the heart of her work.

Her book Common Ground on Hostile Turf is a fascinating investigation into 10 case studies that point up how solutions are found in the most difficult mediations.

“As a mediator committed to bringing people together and finding common ground, I can become discouraged by our increasingly polarized society, where fear and anxiety seem to be prime motivators. But over the past 25 years working on conflicts that seemed intractable, I have met some remarkable people who have taught me important lessons about resolving conflict and have given me reason for hope,” Moore said in her description of the book.

The Authors Speak Series is a monthly event featuring local and regional authors speaking about their writing on a variety of subjects such as local and state history, travel, outdoor activities, fiction, Native American history and culture, poetry and more. The series is funded by the Friends of the Los Alamos County Library System. The talks are free and begin at 7 p.m., on the fourth Thursday of each month, followed by the opportunity to meet the authors and enjoy refreshments.
