Named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America’s top 10 “best small towns to visit” (April 2013), Los Alamos is host to the Atomic Man Duathlon – one of the best and most highly anticipated sporting events in New Mexico.

Now in its ninth year, the Atomic Man Duathlon is scheduled for April 28.

The Duathlon’s intermediate “fat man” course consists of a 10K run (twice around a 5K loop), followed by a 40K bike race; and concluding with a 5K run around one loop. The shorter “little boy” course is comprised of a 4K run; 15K bike race; and finishing with another 4K run.

The Atomic Man Duathlon is divided into racing categories including: individual male/female; age group; Clydesdale, Athena (male and female weight class divisions); and relay teams (male, female and co-ed.) Clydesdale (male) competitors must weigh at least 220 pounds to be eligible in the division; Athena (female) competitors must weight at least 165 pounds.

Awards will be given to the top contenders, and include:

  • $100 to the first place male and female “fat man” winners;
  • $75 to the second place male and female “fat man” qualifiers; and
  • $50 to the third place male and female “fat man” qualifiers.

Gift certificates to the Running Hub running store will be awarded to the first place male and female qualifiers of the “little boy” race.

The Atomic Man Duathlon convenes at the Piñon Elementary School located at 90 Grand Canyon in White Rock, just 10 miles southeast of Los Alamos. The “little boy” races begin at 8 a.m.; the “fat man” races start at 8:30 a.m.

Registration fees are $60 for both the “fat man” adult and youth categories; $50 for the “little boy” adult and youth categories; and $40 for relay adult and youth members in both the “fat man” and “little boy” categories.
