Los Alamos High School Athletics Director Ann Stewart confirmed this morning that statements made by the parent of a high school football player at Friday’s Summer Concert are inaccurate.

Robert Cantua told the Los Alamos Daily Post Monday that his son was given discount cards for local businesses worth a total of $300 to sell and was required to turn in the money at today’s practice. He said his son told him LAHS coaches had paid $20,000 for new equipment for the football program out of their own pockets and that the fundraiser was to reimburse them.

Cantua said he believed his son and had not checked with Stewart or the coaches before making the announcement at the concert.

Stewart said Cantua had given misinformation at Friday’s event.

“This is definitely not the case. Coaches are not forking out their own money for equipment,” she said. “The football program has sold the discount cards for years. The money raised goes directly into the football program and is used mostly for equipment and other various things needed above what the budget is able to provide.”

Stewart said she had spoken to Cantua Monday evening.

Discount cards are still available for purchase at $20 each and provide various discounts for more than a dozen local businesses. For more information, call the LAHS Athletics Office at 505.663.2531.
