Los Alamos Author's 'Adobe Castle' to become a Movie

Los Alamos Author Inez Ross and Director Thadd Turner discuss the 'Adobe Castle' screenplay, based on Ross's novel of the same name, at a planning meeting for the film at La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe Friday. Tentative plans call for filming to begin this spring. Investment options for the project close at the end of February. An investment meeting is planned. Santa Fe Pro Musica is ringing in 2014 with its ever popular Classical Weekend.

The event will feature the Santa Fe Pro Musica Orchestra, with Conductor Thomas O’Connor, performing works of Vaughan Williams, Barber, and Beethoven with violin soloist Cármelo de los Santos. Beautiful music and stunning virtuosity are the hallmarks of this concert set!

'Dr. Atomic' Comes to Los Alamos

Dr. Atomic, the opera by John Adams with libretto by Peter Sellars, is finally coming to Los Alamos in the film version of the Metropolitan Opera production. It will be presented at 2 p.m., Jan. 26 at Fuller Lodge by the Los Alamos Historical Society as part of the Atomic Film Festival.

In preparation for this first presentation of the opera in the real-life setting of its story, PAC-8 is broadcasting the 2006 lecture that was delivered by Karlyn Ward in Fuller Lodge in conjunction with the San Francisco premiere of Dr. Atomic. This

“Salt and Pepper:Tales of Aging with Grace, Courage and Humor” by Los Alamos playwright Robert F. Benjamin and directed by Beth Kennedy Jones, is back at Teatro Paraguas for four performances only at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19. Teatro Paraguas is at 3205 Calle Marie in Santa Fe.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.


Los Alamos Choral Society and Symphony to Present Winter Concert

The Los Alamos Choral Society and the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Mary Badarak will present their Winter Concert at 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Crossroads Bible Church at 97 East Road. Tickets are $15 for adults and available at the door or CB FOX. Students are free.

The program will feature W. A. Mozart’s Requiem and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna.

Soloists for the Requiem are Viera Moore, Mary Beth Stevens, Gloria Streit, Rene Le Claire and Loren Jacobsen.


UNM-LA Music Marathon Offers Six Hours of Music Sunday

The Fourth Annual UNM-Los Alamos Music Marathon will raise money for student scholarships 2-8 p.m. Sunday at UNM-LA Auditorium.

Six hours of live and varied music - from Celtic folk tunes, upbeat jazz, Polish mazurkas with dancers, to a guitar soloist, bluegrass band, and classical piano - all for one voluntary donation. Listeners are welcome to stay for the whole program or come and go as they wish.

The Dixie Girl Restaurant has a lot going on these days, including Dart League on Mondays, Open Mic Tuesdays, Karaoke Thursdays as well as plenty of music.

This week, DK and the Affordables will perform starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. There’s no cover charge.

On Saturday, Beer and Band will move operations to the Dixie Girl from the ski hill at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. Square Peg from Taos will perform. Taos Mesa Brewing will be serving beer and Dixie Girl will offer its bar menu.

Because ski hill operations have been suspended, beer and band has moved to the Dixie Girl Restaurant. The event starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. Taos Mesa Brewing will be serving drinks and Dixie Girl will offer its bar menu. Square Peg, a favorite house band at Taos Mesa, will provide the music.

Thanks to Victor Medina, the new Dixie Girl owner, for supporting Pajarito Mountain events. Come downtown this weekend and do some snow dancing so we can be back on the mountain soon.
