Council approved 6-0 (Steve Girrens was absent) the expenditure of Arts in Public Places Funds in an amount not to exceed $45,000 for the installation in Council Chambers of the Ceramic Mural 'Valle Grande and Jemez River' plus the purchase and installation of two new side panel extensions by artist Sam Tubiolo. Local Cellist Will Perform Dvorak 'Cello Concerto'

SFCO News:

Peter Stoffer, a Los Alamos National Laboratory visiting graduate student from Switzerland is also a cellist. He will perform as a soloist with the Santa Fe Community Orchestra in the Dvorak Cello Concerto in b minor Op.104  at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23 at the St. Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe.

Also on the program is the world premiere of Land of Enchantment by Michael Bowen, winner of the SFCO 2013 Composition Competition and Symphony No.1 by Jean Sibelius

Tickets are not needed. Donations are gladly accepted. Seating is limited and fills quickly, so plan to arrive early.

Grammy-nominated harpist Yolanda Kondonassis www.yolandaharp.com, will perform with guitarist Jason Vieux at 4 p.m., March 16 at Duane W. Smith Auditorium, 1300 Diamond Dr., as part of the Los Alamos Concert Association.

The program will feature Diego Pujol’s “Suite Mágica,” Alan Hovhaness’ “Spirit of Trees,” Gary Shocker’s “Hypnosis for Guitar and Harp,” Keith Fitch’s “Knock on Wood for Guitar and Harp” and Xavier Montsalvatge’s “Fantasia for Guitar and Harp.” In addition, Kondonassis will perform Carlos Salzedo’s “Song in the Night”

Maria Jones Wins Second National Title

Braving snowstorms and icy temperatures, four Belisama dancers traveled to Newark, N.J. to compete at the 2014 CRN North American Irish Dance Championships over President’s Day weekend.

It was well worth the trip because 18-year-old Maria Jones came home as the North American Champion for the under-18 division. Competition age groups are determined by the dancer’s age on Sept. 1.

Sculpture Exhibition to Celebrate Alan Houser

SANTA FE—The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) will honor world renowned artist and teacher Allan Houser’s 100th birthday with an outdoor sculpture exhibition scheduled for Aug. 3, 2014 through June 1, 2015.

"Footprints: The Inspiration and Influence of Allan Houser" will feature works by sculptors who were inspired or influenced by Allan Houser either as a student, mentee, protégé or artist.

The exhibition of up to 15 works will be on Milner Plaza just outside MIAC and shared with the Museum of International Folk Art.

I have to thank all of you who waited on the hill for Philomena, and here it comes. Friday, Feb. 21 we will open it for a week with matinee shows only, then the following week it will have its very own full schedule of every day, every show time. See you there.

We will be holding Robocop, Winter’s Tale (evening shows only), Monuments Men, and LEGO for another week.

If you do go see The Lego Movie this weekend, please get to the theater early as it has been selling out.

Arts in Public Places Board to Discuss Native American Pots for N.M. 4 Corridor

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Arts in Public Places Board  will meet at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Tewa Center in San Ildefonso Pueblo.

Board members will meet with artists at San Ildefonso Pueblo to discuss plans and ideas for Native American pots along the N.M. 4 corridor in White Rock.

A quorum may be present but no board action will be taken.

All attendees must notify the Community Services Administrative Office in advance at 505.662.8241.
