The first film ever in which a Latino was nominated for an Oscar, Director Robert Montgomery’s “Ride the Pink Horse” (1947), will screen at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos.
In this noir-style film shot in Santa Fe, Gagin (Montgomery) speaks few words but carries a big secret — or at least, so it seems — all the way to the border town of San Pablo, where FBI Agent Bill Retz (Art Smith) and bad guy Frank Hugo (Fred Clark) figure him out posthaste, or so it seems.

Dog Jog Logo Contest Deadline March 5
Saturday, March 5 is the deadline for entries for the annual Dog Jog logo contest.
The Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter is calling on all young community members to help brand this year’s run. Any child in the third to sixth grade is invited to put their artistic skills to work for a good cause.
The winning design will be used as the official 2016 Los Alamos Dog Jog logo and be placed on event t-shirts and other official event materials. The Logo Contest winner will receive one free t-shirt.

A Taste Of Knowledge Beer & Wine Tasting March 4
LAPSF News:
The Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation will host a beer and wine tasting event, A Taste of Knowledge, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 4 at the Bradbury Science Museum.
Participants will sample a wide variety of specially selected beers and wines, choosing eight tastes from among 12 offerings. An array of delicious appetizers will accompany the beverages.
All proceeds benefit the Great Ideas Grants available to school district classroom teachers each fall and spring from the LAPS Foundation.

“Trumbo” tells the true story of mid 20th century screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted for his affiliation with the Communist Party. This would seem a common story among the literati of Hollywood in the 1950s.

The much admired Dover Quartet will perform in the Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11 as part of the Los Alamos Concert Association’s 70th Anniversary Season.
Since a triumphant sweep at the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2013, the Dover has won acclaim world-wide.
