Cinema Cindy Reviews: Arrival

“Arrival” is the latest truly science fiction movie to hit the screens. Loosely based on a short story by Ted Chiang entitled “Story of Your Life”, the film puts flesh on the story’s bones.
 
Chiang’s framework sets up the deeper discoveries made by the characters, but most everything else in the film, including character names and contexts are different. In my opinion, the visual story works better as a whole, giving us more time to delve into the experience of space aliens visiting our planet.

Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church warmly invites the public to its Christmas Eve Family Communion service.

The National Weather Service reports a daytime high of 35 with this morning’s snow likely turning to rain this afternoon. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible. At 7 p.m., Friday, Dec 23, local astronomers will share information about the sun and the winter solstice in the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium.
 
The winter solstice, marking the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, also signifies the first day of winter. Astronomers will use the planetarium dome to reveal how this cosmic dynamic works and share more information about our solar system.

Los Alamos Big Band Christmas Dance Dec. 28

Mark your calendars! The annual Christmas Dance featuring the Los Alamos Big Band is 7:30-10:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall. Come and dance the night away, or if dancing isn’t your thing, just sit and enjoy listening to the live sounds of the 40’s and 50’s with some Christmas tunes mixed in of course. All of the proceeds will benefit the IHM Youth Group who will be hosting the event with festive decorations and refreshments. Tickets are $15, $10 for students and $5 for children under 12.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs announces that the first free Sunday for New Mexico residents at its four Santa Fe museums, two Albuquerque Museums, and seven historic sites, is Sunday, Jan. 8, because Sunday, Jan. 1, is New Year’s Day and the Museums will be closed for the holiday.
