Staff Report

This evening during the work session underway at Fire Station 3 in White Rock, Arts in Public Places Board Chair Steve Foltyn is briefing the Los Alamos County Council on the accomplishments over the past year of the his committee as well as future planned activities.

Council leadership has requested that each board, commission or committee chair make a presentation to the Council once a year focused on what has been completed and what they are currently working on, and what challenges or opportunities they see coming up in the future.

Council Vice Chair David Izraelevitz commented that the Arts in Public Places presentations are the most creative of the departments that go before Council. Izraelevitz is chairing this evening’s meeting as Chair Kristin Henderson s absent. Councilor James Chrobocinski also is absent and Councilor Susan O’Leary is attending via telephone.

Foltyn discussed the various projects on the horizon including the placement of large scale pottery on N.M. 4 in White Rock and art in or on the fence between the Los Alamos County Airport and East Road, which is more than one mile long, he said.

Councilor Steven Girrens asked Foltyn to remind everyone where the funds for public art come from. Foltyn explained that the County allocates 1 percent for the arts from every capital improvement project exceeding $20,000 and .5 percent from all road projects.

The balance in the public art fund as of April 8 was $787,533, Foltyn said, adding that various planned projects will whittle the balance down to $227,283.
