AP Night At LAHS Thursday Jan. 31

LAPS News:

Students and parents are invited to attend AP Night, 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the IMC (school library) at Los Alamos High School.

Attendees meet with teachers and students to learn more about specific Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors course offerings at LAHS, as well as the dual credit programs offered at the high school. In addition representatives from UNM-LA and Northern New Mexico will be available to discuss dual credit and other college level courses.

AP Night attendees are asked to park in the Sullivan field lot since Future Topper Night is also being held the same evening.

All LAHS students must take an AP class, an Honors class, an online class, or a dual credit class to fulfill a graduation requirement. LAHS offers seven Honors courses, 25 AP courses and several dual credit classes.

Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. At the end of the course, students are required to take the AP exam in order to be eligible to earn a weighted grade.

There are many reasons to take an AP course according to the CollegeBoard AP website. Students who take AP courses stand out in the college admissions
process. In some cases, a student can earn college credits. By taking an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam, you can save on college expenses: most colleges and universities nationwide offer college credit, advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam scores. These credits can allow students to save college tuition, study abroad, or secure a second major.

Taking an AP class and earning a qualifying score on the exam may also help a student advance and avoid required introductory classes. Students are able to move in to upper level classes. Most importantly, taking an AP course builds the skills that students will need to succeed in college.

LAHS has received an AP District Honor Roll Award, becoming the first school district in New Mexico to receive this national award. Last year 341 students were
enrolled in AP courses at LAHS, and took 613 AP exams in May.
