By Animal Shelter Ad-Hoc Committee:

The Animal Shelter Ad-Hoc Committee (ASAC), appointed by the Los Alamos County Council, is hard at work and we need your input!

The ASAC members include Chair Wendee Brunish, Vice Chair Linda Zwick, Melissa Bartlett, Wendy Marcus, Mary Timmers, Sally Wilkins and Jennifer Jung.

The mission of the ASAC is to provide a recommendation to the Los Alamos County Council, along with high-level cost estimates, as to what type of organizational structure best meets high standards for the humane treatment of animals while providing a high-level of service to the citizens of the County. This recommendation should be aligned with the needs and expectations of our citizens and the local animal rescue community.

As our mission states, we need to understand what the citizens of Los Alamos County want and expect from our local animal shelter. We are open to a broad range of options but we recognize that different options that provide different levels of animal care, including advanced veterinary treatment and behavioral
training and modification, and community services, including surrender prevention and pre- and post-adoption counseling come with different operating costs.

That’s why we need your help! If you have any feedback, positive or negative, about the current animal sheltering operations we need to hear from you. If you would like to see the Los Alamos Animal Shelter be a state-of-the-art shelter that plays a transformative role in caring for animals and serving our community and setting a shining example for animal sheltering throughout our state, please let us know!

Any and all input, ideas, and suggestions are most welcome. Contact the committee at sophiesamfoote@gmail.com. All input will be passed on to the committee, but you are welcome to remain anonymous if you wish.

We also will be issuing a public survey to all citizens of the county, so we hope that everyone will participate in our survey so that we can get a general sense of how our citizens feel about this important issue.

If you would like to provide specific detailed individual input to the committee, contact Sally by Jan. 31, 2019.
